Relationships: The Complexity and Importance in Our Lives

Relationships represent a complex tapestry of interactions, often with much occurring beneath the surface. They challenge us daily, requiring us to form new bonds while nurturing existing ones. Each relationship demands a unique approach to meet various emotional needs, responding to a wide range of stimuli. Recognising those relationships that energise us, as opposed to those that drain, is crucial.

Positive emotions play a pivotal role in building cooperative relationships. Trust, curiosity, confidence, and inspiration expand our minds, aiding in the development of psychological, social, and physical resources. This process enhances our openness, resilience, persistence, and creativity – traits essential for individual and organisational success.

Conversely, feelings of threat can increase oxytocin levels, undermining trust and trust-building behaviours, which are fundamental to healthy relationships. Our natural tribal instincts often bind us to our immediate group. However, if cross-functional connections aren't fostered, 'us vs them' thinking can intensify. By establishing shared identities that extend beyond our immediate circle, we reorient our brains towards broader relationships, moving past ingrained biases. Encouraging cross-functional teams to take responsibility across silos helps redefine 'us,' enhancing cohesion and collaboration throughout the organisation.

A fundamental human need is feeling valued and that our work matters. This sense of value fosters belonging. With the shift to hybrid working, nurturing relationships across functions has become more challenging due to limited communication and personal interaction.

As teams, dedicating time to bond and strengthen ties is critical. Creating opportunities for bonding is an integral part of the work we do with teams, fostering mutual encouragement and support.
